Supreme Cuts Reign Supreme

supremecutsSupreme Cuts (Soundcloud, Facebook) is made up of producers Mike Perry and Austin Keultjes from Chicago. Having already played venues across the globe, Lollapalooza 2013 (okay – this doesn’t really count because they had technical difficulties during their set and they were one of the top artists I wanted to see at Lolla. Still crying about…), and opening for AlunaGeorge, Supreme Cuts may not need much introduction, but here’s the lowdown on the up-and-comers!

The duo first released a five track EP titled Trouble back in 2011 with electronic experimental beats and an addictive R&B flavor. Standout tracks to listen to are “Amnesia” and “Fools”. Trouble EP was then followed by Whispers In The Dark – which took a more chill, ethereal, down tempo, glo-fi approach with heavy snares and tom toms – however “Belly” and “18th” deviate from this pattern. Supreme Cuts quickly became reminiscent of Jacques Greene, Niva, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

In 2013, Supreme Cuts streamed their third and most prominent album Divine Ecstasy exclusively on their website. For this album, Supreme Cuts added guest vocals from Channy Leaneagh of Poliça, Portland’s own Shy Girls, and Paris-born artist Mahaut Mondino, among other artists. With the help of these contemporary, soulful vocals, Divine Ecstasy promises to be a record played in heavy rotation when you need to relax and unwind. Favorite tracks are “Gone” and “Brown Flowers” which both feature Mahaut Mondino. (Homegirl is fierce and takes it to church!) Do yourself a favor and play this album one night in its entirety. You won’t be disappointed!
