Watching Paul White’s Ants Is Fun!

It’s been a good summer for those of you who enjoy the producer side of the hip hop game.  Blockhead’s produced a few albums (example), Dfalt and Cassettes Won’t Listen released albums, RJD2 has an album coming up in a few months and the El-P produced and starred (alongside Killer Mike) Run The Jewels album dropped.  Now Paul White joins the crew with this extremely good album out, released just a few days ago.

Including equal parts instrumentals/beats and MC features, this one is a great example of how a beatstrumental producer can spin gold not only on his own but with MC’s of varying caliber and locales.  Danny Brown, Trim, Homeboy Sandman and Sean Price all make appearances and they’re all so dope.  The tune with Trim includes clarinet, Trim’s notably British accent and copious amounts of echo to create a wall of sound kind of feel.  Plopped right down in the middle of the album, it’s a great way to round the corner and head towards the back stretch. The last tune, featuring Homeboy Sandman concludes the album with a dreamy, almost ethereal quality, that pairs with Sandman’s stream of consciousness type flow and brings you to the close that started out with a little bit of wonk, and ends with a little bit more.
